Overview

At the heart of Columbus’s Hungarian Village lies Eight and Sand Tavern & Refuge, a warm neighborhood bar and grill where the spirit of community is as rich as the menu. This modest yet inviting space, nestled on East Innis Avenue, radiates the charm of a classic tavern updated with a modern, welcoming twist. With cozy half-booths, high-top tables, and a long bar that draws locals and newcomers alike, the atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between intimacy and lively conviviality—ideal for casual game days or a relaxed date night.

The culinary focus here is straightforward but expertly crafted, with an emphasis on comfort food that feels both familiar and elevated. Wings take center stage, with jumbo cuts brined and confit before a crisp fry—served naked or tossed in house-made sauces—making for some of the best around. Patrons frequently applaud the Pimento Smash Burger, a standout sandwich that layers juicy, tender chicken with creamy pimento cheese, delivering a satisfying depth of flavor. Other menu highlights reveal a thoughtful variety: from a hearty Build Your Own Dog with customizable toppings, to the innovative Wings Mac & Cheese Burger, merging indulgence and creativity on a toasted bun.

Wraps like the Chicken Bacon Ranch and the Chicken Caesar provide a lighter but no less flavorful option, while fried classics such as pickle spears and corndogs echo the tavern’s commitment to nostalgic bar bites done well. The side mac and cheese dazzles with its creamy richness and cozy texture, perfectly complementing any main dish.

Beyond the food, the beverage program offers a spirited companion to the meal, with a carefully curated beer selection and a robust lineup of liquors. Signature cocktails such as the Espresso Martini add a refined touch to the casual setting. Guests note the attentive, friendly bartending—often by the owner himself—fostering a genuine connection with patrons and creating a sense of belonging.

Eight and Sand appeals especially to those who cherish neighborhood spots with heart: from locals seeking comfort food in convivial surroundings to adventurous diners looking to escape the run-of-the-mill options. The bar’s multiple TVs make it a hub on game days, while its intimate feel lends itself to easy conversation and lingering evenings. The menu may evoke dive bar simplicity at first glance, but the quality and care behind every dish elevate the experience to a haven for food lovers and community seekers alike.

In sum, Eight and Sand Tavern & Refuge stands as a testament to what great neighborhood bars can be—unpretentious yet memorable, with dishes that feel like a warm welcome. If you’re in Columbus and craving well-executed bar classics paired with a vibrant but laid-back atmosphere, this hidden gem is worth every visit.

I love this place. Their wings are delicious, the pimento smash burger is my go to every single time. Decent beer selection with all the Liquors you could ask for. They have multiple tvs for game days and a friendly neighborhood atmosphere

We enjoy going out on Wednesdays to eat and explore new places. I also like small, out-of-the-way neighborhood places. Eight & Sand in Hungarian Village is the epitome of a neighborhood bar. It's small inside, with a great bar down one side of the space, a few high-top two-seaters, and half-booths taking up the rest. There was room for standing around, and everyone was friendly. They had a wide selection of beer, and it was really cold. The food was better than expected for a borderline dive bar. My burger was excellent, with just the right amount of cheese and dressing. My wife had a meatball sub that was the special and declared it mighty acceptable. 8 and Sand is a great place, so if you are into getting out of your rut, we highly recommend them. On a second trip, our experience was again super. The bartender was the owner. He greeted us as regulars. My with had the special steak torta steak, smashed avocado, LTO, and chimichurri on a toasted hoagie, and I had Coney Dog1/3lb all beef, house coney sauce, onions, cheddar, yellow mustard, toasted bun. Both were large portions. This place has a dive bar neighborhood vibe and is a super place.

Wow! What a hidden gem!! We tried the place for our monthly "Date Dinner" and we were not disappointed! Great atmosphere! The staff were all friendly, especially Nate behind the bar. But the FOOD! Soooo good!! Got the Pimento Cheese Chicken: one of the best chicken sandwiches I've ever had. My wife got the Bacon Jam Burger. I had to try it. Superb!! We also tried the Truffle Fries! Again, so good. Overall, I can't wait to go back and try a different sandwich! Don't miss out on this place!

This place may not be the biggest name around. However, they made the best chicken sandwich I have had. The pimento cheese burger was top of the line as well. This is a little corner tavern where the locals visit regularly. This is a must visit place. Next time, I will try the wings.

My wife and I, visited the Eight and Sand for the first time, a few days ago. It's a comfortable, hidden treasure. The atmosphere was reasonably quiet ( for a bar, with great music. The service was excellent, the food was perfect. If you go, I highly recommend the bacon cheeseburger!

Went here last night for the first time, my 40th birthday. We were just going for low key Bday. This is 100% my type of place. Bartender is super cool, the crowd is laid back. The grub is off the hook. We had the railyard chicken sandwich. Fried chicken, jalapeno, honey: off the hook. We also had a pimiento smash burger with a really good sauce, a couple teriyaki wings because it was $1 wing night (they were tender meaty and not overpowered by the HOUSEMADE teriyaki)….and we got a side of mac and cheese. The cheese sauce is home made, has a really savory/briny flavor. I had a few beer. The wife had a mule and a Tom Collins: both of which she really enjoyed. It’s a random residential neighborhood, like somewhere I grew up. We will definitely be back.
